Many a Happy time in there; usually before I left for Newcastle in the early 80's.

I suppose this one should be in "Then and Now" but I thought I would stick it here with the other photo.

The first one was taken in the Eighties and the second one this summer.

If you want to move it to the other thread thats ok

SteveHB has moved a copy of this picture to the "then and now" thread where it is in theme with the other stuff there.

Great picture, thanks carlie167

...just a thought - would this be the same view NOW/today- on the "newer" picture , as the steel fencing on the right was surrounding the site of demolished Yorkshire Grey pub / building of the "Cheese Grater" car park ???? Just shows how quick our "history" changes!!! :o

It looks like a "cheese grater" close up (not a very nice building at that distance) but it is the "sugar lump" from further away, - a glistening cubic jewel (quite an attractive building from just up the hills out of town.

I still haven't decided if I like this building or not yet. I get the impression most people dont.

....probably a nice / landmarky type building which no doubt in 20/30 years time will become an icon like THITR (just because you cannot miss it),- my grievance with it is that the "Yorkshire Grey" pub had to be sacrificed, which in my opinion was a better "designed" pub than the facing Robuck. :( ---and while we are in the same area - how many Sheffielders are happy with the new "oil rig" which has replaced the" Wedding Cake "Register Office? (other than the divorcees!!!!!) many of which will not be able to show their children/grandchildren where they were married??? :(

...just another thought - i think once the "new" markets are built down there, maybe the cheesegrater will be the the new "Coles Corner" or "Fishtank" as a meeting place for the "next"generation of Sheffielders??????

OK transit here is a NOW photograph taken yesterday, 22 November 2008. I think this may be the view you are describing.

I was once a very regular "regular" in the Roebuck during the late 70s/early 80s. It was an interesting and lively place with a very mixed clientele...from Town Hall "suites"...enjoying a lunchtime bevvy ( before it became an anti-social practice at SCC), the odd Solicitor, engaged in deep conversation, and the town centre road sweeping team. It even had a few rogues and "villains". Everyone seemed to get on very nicely together!
