An unpublished autobigraphy by James Howarth mentions the Barrel which he says is "At the top of Chapel lane in the Marsh" Chapel lane is now Ringinglow Road and the crossroads by High Storrs School is Marsh House. he goes on to say "I very well remember seeing both bull and bear baiting at the Ecclesall Feast in one of Thomas Binney's fields behind the Barrel Public House at the top of Chapel Lane on the Marsh. It would be when I was between 10 and 12 yrs of age [1821-23] which I think would be about the last brutal exhibition of the kind here about at least by this man."
