Dear History Team - I am researching the poet, Byron, and a trip he made in September 1811 possibly via Sheffield. Do you know how I can find the date of the Byron House Hotel in Nether Edge?

Hello and welcome to the site 1348Anne.

I never did find out any more about the Byron - a swift search today informs me that Louisa Betts was a landlady there. Louisa passed away in July 2010, aged 97 years. No further information, so we don't know the year(s) she was there.

Anyone else got any information please ?

A licence was granted to William Sanders for the Byron House in September 1869. It is on the corner of Nether Edge Road and Byron Road. The next house along Byron Road is number 1 which used to be called Byron Cottage, though no longer is so named.

The OS map I have for 1854 is very poor resolution, but certainly at that time there was no Byron Road. There were buildings in the general area of the Byron House (a few yards east of the Union Workhouse) but I can't make out what they were - maybe someone has a better map?

So was it a boozer back in 1869 ?

I've certainly looked and I'm sure Ukelele Lady has also looked - we've looked for years, not just for the Byron obviously but for all Pubs.

Can anyone find William Sanders in 1871 Census (or any other), I still don't have access.

Couldn't find it in 1925 - maybe someone else can.

It only qualifies with a name (got), a location (got), a year and a named keeper.

Thank you for the update.

A mystery indeed ...

Here's the newspaper clipping showing the granting of the beer and wine licence in 1869:

The census sheet for Wm Sanders in 1871 is here - he is at the corner of Nether Edge Road and Byron Road, but his occupation is Grocer, possibly the licence was just a beer house and his main trade was groceries? In 1861 he was a Grocer and Baker at 158 Duke Street, Park.

It's up to Ukelele Lady to make the decision, but for me it's in; Congratulations on pre-dating Byron House from 1948 to 1869.

Excellent work, just what SheffieldHistory does best.

Thank you

Louisa Betts was my Grandmother. She ran the Byron House Hotel with my Grandad, Harold, after managing the Nether Edge Bowling Club where my Grandad was also the green keeper. I lived at the Byron when I was very young and still remember it, but my Mum will remember more. What do you want to know?
