Many of you will remember the days of stockcar racing and Willie Harrison racing in front of full houses at Owlerton stadium under lights. Well we still do stockcars at Owlerton and next Sunday 22nd July there is a World Championship semi final for the F1 cars supported by the F2 cars and an added bonus of some of the old 1950's and 1960's cars you might have seen racing at Owlerton in the "good old days". They have been rebuilt to their original design, from photos and sometimes from memory. They will "race" but no real contact is allowed.

However, the real thing, todays F1's, will be knocking hell out of each other to try to get through to the World Final.

Start time for the old cars is 1pm and it's 2pm for the meeting proper.

MONDAY 22ND OCTOBER SHEFFIELD 7.30PM FORMULA ONES PLUS SUPPORT

Gates Open at 6.pm with Support Racing for the All action Ministox from 7 pm and the chaos and mayhem of Rooki Banger Banger Racing.

F1's roar onto track with the main programme starting at 7.30.pm.

And a gigantic firework display to end the night.

What year did Willie Harrison start racing at Owlerton ? Stockcar racing was on the go at Owlerton in the 1950s, as kids we would watch from the top of the stone quarry on the rec at Parkwood Springs, even up there a good mile or so away from the action the noise of the cars was deafening, W/E.

Willie took to the tracks as a teenager in 1954, right at the birth of the short circuit phenomenon that eventually was to capture the imagination and support of so many people and become a way of life. Even in that first season he began his winning ways. His car was a 1937 Vauxhall powered by a 'S' type Bedford engine that he used until the 1958 season.

It was Sheffield in 1955 where one of my favourite stock car stories occurred. Willie won three finals in succession and during one of them the stadium floodlights failed. In the dark but undaunted, he switched on the headlights of the big Vauxhall and took the chequered flag!
