I think this remnant of a grand gateway was the home of Mr Jonathan Beardshaw File & Steel Manufacturer who's family eventually had the Baltic Steel Works on Effingham Rd but its the name HOLME thats on the gate post that intrigues me, only the top of the left had post is still there so does anyone know what the name of the house was. I've been in touch with a descendent of Jonathan's but he doesn't know. This will be in the Retro hopefully next week. Thanks.

I think the gatepost belongs to Beech Holme (see 1890 map) I think Beech Holme was no 25:

But I don't believe the Beardshaws lived there, probably next door - see 1871 census:

There's more related info at the SH thread here:

As usual Sheffield History has come up trumps, looking at the map I now know that Mushroom Bank is where the Beardshaws lived and it looks like they got the address of Northumberland Road as that's where the letter box was situated.

Below is an extract from R.E.Leader's "Sheffield in the Eighteenth Century" published in 1901. It says the Beardshaws had the Cock Inn on Hollis Croft, then Jonathan ran the Ball Inn at Hawley Croft (SH Pub Index says 1818 - 1830).

Leader also states that the Beardshaw house at the corner of Northumberland Road and Western Bank was originally called "The Racecourse Nook, Crookesmoor" - presumably after the Crookesmoor racecourse, though that was some distance away, the nearest part of the track crossing the current Fulwood Road/Spooner Road junction.
