Edmund
William Robert Jones, publican, Sportsmans Group, 851 Penistone Road - known Nov 1922 to May 1924 (Insolvent Debtors) A nice quiet pub. In July 1854 a 29 grinder called Joseph Crookes was murdered there. There was raucous, drunken dancing following the Owlerton Feast. This was followed by a near riot. Henry Sanderson, a forgeman of Wadsley Bridge, testified “Crookes was knocked down by Fatty Knowles soon after he got out of the door. Fatty Holroyd punched him. I cannot say whether it was a cart prop or a square piece of wood with which Knowles struck Crookes, but he (Knowles) struck me with the same weapon” When the landlord (Hollins) came out with his gun they ran off, leaving Crookes dead. The culprits were sent for trial at York. The Grand Jury “ignored the bill against” Peech, but Charles ‘Cutter” Haynes, George Knowles (alias Noile) and John Holroyd were sentenced to 6 years
