jord54as
Just wondering if there is anyone that is dedicated to putting together family trees? Ive seen a few websites that can do it but it seems like a lot of hassle . Is there anyone in Sheffield that will research it for me? I'm not being lazy btw (well..maybe slightly) i just don't know where to start looking and want to make sure its actually my relatives and not people with the same name. any help would be appreciated . carol cooper
I suggest that you try it yourself by going to Sheffield Archives on Shoreham St. Check their website for opening times. They will help you in your research but you need to have a few basics like family names rough dates, addresses etc. In fact anything you have on your family, starting from the present and working back. It helps if you have slightly unusual surnames in the family but not a necessity. A very worthwhile hobby but made a lot more enjoyable and exciting when you have done your own research. History dude
Most family history websites especially the local ones have the names of professional Genealogists who for a fee will do the research for you. However I would first check with your relatives as these days many people have already joined one of the family history sites and done it themselves. Since I started I have encountered many of my own relatives that have joined Ancestry before me and done some work. However since you can join places like that for short periods, sometimes you find a tree connected with you, but are not able to contact the person who owns it, since their membership has run out and no longer link to the website. This can be frustrating since you can't see living people in a tree without the owners consent. And if they are no longer members then you can't ever get their consent. A cheaper alternative is to buy one of the Family Tree Maker software's. These come with free time to one of the ancestry websites so you can look at the records without paying the over £100 fee to join the site. Plus it's cheaper than hiring someone to do the research. I cannot recommend the Sheffield Archives, thanks to cuts the opening times are reduced and the staff will not have the time to help you unless you have experience in the field of Family History research and really know the system they use. As an historian I have found Sheffield Archives and Local Studies on the whole unhelpful. That was before the recent Governments cuts! So I can't see them improving the service after them!! carol cooper
Personally I have always found the archives staff very helpful over the past 20 years. Even if you have no idea where to start, they will explain the basics to you. They occasionally run classes for beginners so it is worth giving them a call. The other advantage of going there is that other researchers will always help answer any queries you may have and point you in the right direction. I always found the researchers a friendly helpful group, who got to know each other as friends, sharing their information and knowledge, gained over many years. All the local information you might want is in Sheffield archives. Give it a go. You can also access the Internet i.e. Ancestry for free but you still need to know the basics even if you buy a family history programme. You need to have information to be able to input it.
