Edmund
Not asked for but here is some information on the Porter Street Porter Cottage. There is an error in the index, John James was at the Sharrow Vale pub. 20th August 1851 Jonathan Sutcliffe refused spirits licence at the Brewster sessions, stated he had kept the Porter Cottage on a beer licence for the last 5 years. refused spirits licence due to keeping a brothel before the beer house, and recent after hours serving. 28 August 1852 Jonathan Sutcliffe withdrew spirit licence application due to a rating value technicality (1845 law required a minimum rateable value for beer houses) 3rd September 1853 Jonathan Sutcliffe refused spirits licence again. Stated that the premises had been a beerhouse for 8 years. Refusal based on brothel connection, plus stolen goods on premises. 26 August 1854 Jonathan Sutcliffe refused spirits licence 28th August 1858 - death notice of Jonathan Sutcliffe's daughter (Porter Cottage) 17th September 1869 Charlotte Bradshaw granted licence for Porter Cottage at Brewster sessions 1st July 1870 Charlotte Bradshaw fined 20s for short measures
