Art Deco Houses

vox

Recommended Posts

May have posted on this before but I can't remember.

I know of two areas where there are a few of these flat roofed Art Deco houses. One of which is Here at Norton (Henley Ave and Cloonmore Drive.)

And these which have had a pitched roof conversion done.

+++++++++++++++

The only others that I know of are here on Stradbroke Road.

Some friends owned one of the ones on Cloonmore Drive, and a relative used to have one of the Stradbroke ones. - I'm sure there must be others but I've never noticed them.

There was a few at the bottom of Hucklow Rd opposite the school , where it meets Barnsley Rd , I don't know if they have still got their flat roofs, not been round there recently but they had when I went to school in the early '50's !!

There's one on Abbeyfield Road, down a little on the left after turning in from Scott Road. Sorry, don't know how to include a pic. from Google Earth.

Apologies for bumping such an old thread.

I own one of these houses on Cloonmore Drive in Norton, but as it will be shortly going up for sale I'm trying to discover some more information on the history of these houses to pass onto prospective buyers.

When we bought the house in 1999, the existing owners told us the following:

"The houses on this street and the area nearby were built in 1936 by a German architect. The plan was to built a far more extensive area of such housing, including a lido and other shared areas.

However, when WW2 broke out the architect had to return to Germany so the project was never completed as planned. "

A friend has since told me that he suspects the project may have been connected with Gleeson who's headquarters used to be in the area, and who employed German architect(s) at that time. He said the term "Norton Model Village" rang a bell.

I have been unable to find anything concrete confirming any of this but would be very interested to know if anyone has any further information.

It's good to revive some of these old but interesting posts  Myke , I always wondered about these houses many years ago when I passed them regularly. They remind me of buildings in the Poirot films..

The Sheffield Archives have some planning documentation from 1935 onwards (ref CA206) - you can see some summaries by putting "Cloonmore" in the Archives search here:

May be worth a visit, or at least a phone call to ask what they have.

During the 1930's Michael Gleeson, contractor lived at "Cloonmore", Woodseats (possibly 29 Meadowhead?)

Do your house deeds and/or lease contain any clues ?

Meanwhile I'm pretty certain at Meadowhead roundabout, next door but one to the garage was a really nice Art Deco house - but it's been 'improved' some time in the 1980's/1990's

Always been fascinated by these, I was seriously looking into buying one 10-12 years ago

On the corner of North Quadrant and Sicey Avenue in Firth Park there stood a rather splendid art-deco house. It was once occupied by a doctor and that's how ,as kids, we knew it. Haven't been back to my roots for many a year so it may have gone.
