tozzin
Was this building on East Bank Road owned by the Duke of Norfolk or was it owned by the railway? There are the initials S.R. on the date stone.
SteveHB
S.R. = Samuel Roberts, it is the old gate house to Queens Tower http://www.sheffieldhistory.co.uk/forums/index.php/topic/5539-queens-tower/
History dude
I always thought it was something to do with Queen's Tower.

History dude
According to the Memorials of The Family of Roberts. The first Samuel Roberts (1732-1799) had a son also called Samuel who set up the silver plateing firm with a chap called Cadman. In 1834 the family moved to Park Grange. His son the third Samuel is the one that built Queen's Tower. Samuel (III) was a good drawer and is believed to have gone to Alton Towers and sketched the "new" building (1829). From these he drew up the design for Queen's Tower. His only son Samuel (IV) married Elizabeth Creswick daughter of Thomas Creswick of East Hill House. I suspect he might be the one that added this building on to the grounds as the date fits in better. Interestingly Queen's Tower was built on a 99 lease from the Duke of Norfolk, starting 1834. When it ran out in 1933 despite pleas from the Duke to renew it, the Roberts family wouldn't and left Sheffield to live in Norfolk. The property reverting back to the Duke of Norfolk.
