At the top of Sharrow Vale Rd, just before the roundabout with Cemetery Rd and Psalter Lane, there are several old buildings on both sides of the road. They look to pre-date everything around them and i wonder what they are / were? I don't have a decent picture but Street View will be clear as to what i mean :)

Assuming the numbering didn't change, 10 Psalter lane backs onto Sharrowvale road

In 1886 Henry Thompson (a seconder for a candidate in the general election), was living there.

In 1896 number 10 was occupied by Charles and Mary Ann Hodgkinson (the Independent published a report of the death of their young son Bernard, scalded by a bucket of hot water). Mr.C.H. Hodgkinson was a manager at Messrs. G. and H. Hall, Tool Manufacturers, Hereford street.

10 Psalter Lane was the home address of Albert Harland, Managing Director of J & H Wilson Snuff Manufacturers in 1905 and 1911 ,in Whites Directory, and Kellys directory in 1925.

Possibly there was a connection with Harland Road, on the other side of the General Cemetery?

1863 map on picture Sheffield www.picturesheffield.com/maps.php?file=031 shows what appears to be a large house called Westbrook then the long narrow building with Westbrook Mill behind it. The footpath leading off Frog Walk is also shown behind Westbrook Mill. I was looking at this map to try to identify Cemetery Cottage where an ancestor lived in 1851 but could not find it.

Sharrow Green Cottage

Picture Sheffield quote:

"Built in 1795 by the Rev. Alexander Mackenzie. From this reverend gentleman the cottage passed by descent to Captain Toll who sold it to John Smith in 1851.In 1862, John Smith, in turn, sold the cottage to Henry Wilson, owner of the very old snuff mills nearby."

I went past earlier and the cottage has a sign over the front door (not datestone) that says 'Sharrow Green Cottage 1795'.
