Need someone to identify a few locations on this one I think, plus does anyone know where this would have been taken from?

It says it was taken from the university

It does but my brain can't compute exactly where I'm looking

I that that the "spike" in the foreground is the self-same on that still sits atop "Firth Court", the 1905 built, brick built, crenelated building that adjoins Weston Park, so the photographer was probably standing on top of the adjoining turret.

It appears that the photographer is stood on the Castellated tower, atop the University building, looking down Leavygreave Road, towards the City centre.

This photo (although later than 1905) shows the castellated vantage point and the spire that is showing in the centre of your photo:

I can remember the shops in the left foreground where the Tram now runs up and from what was the beginning or the end ( whichever way you were travelling) of Upper Netherthorpe Road.
