tozzin
Had a walk round what was old Gleadless Village last week and I found this inscription on a house on Kirby Road. As you can see it says Holland's Terrace with a date of 1872, was it the name of the houses and if it was just who was Mr Holland? I cant see it being the original road name as it to high up on the house.
Edmund
Here's the man - George Holland, a tailor, in 1881: He had premises in Exchange Street but went into liquidation in 1873. One Wednesday afternoon in 1886 he went with another man and two women into the Little Tankard (Little Pond Street) and one of the women was alleged to have pick-pocketed a bag containing 35s from his pocket. However there was no evidence and the crime was not solved.
History dude
I have his gravestone picture in my collection. However rather than post it - as it's slate grey granite with a lot of light intrusion making it hard to read - I'll just give the facts. We have George who died 3 July 1894 aged 65. However he wasn't put in the ground till July 6. Then Eva Holland who died aged 7 months. (no date mentioned so the body might not be in this grave). And Mary Ann Holland his wife died aged 72 on March 24 1905.

Edmund
This cutting is perhaps mostly of interest to anyone with Mr Holland in their family tree. It may throw some light into interesting corners..

History dude
Yes he is. PM if you want the picture of the grave or I can post here if quicker or more members want it. I couldn't say where though. It's not a big place though.
