eBay £950.

A mystery ! Made in Sheffield, but which City Police force are we talking here ? Do any of the names engraved on there have any kind of Sheffield connection, any thoughts ?

Nice summary of the details, no conclusion arrived at.

The hallmarks first... easy to see... WW over H makers mark... Sheffield initial P and Queen Victoria's head ... which is Sheffield 1882 ..the makers mark is that of William Wheatcroft Harrison ...if you google him ...you will find he mainly did silver plated items later in his day....so to find actual sterling silver items from him is a BONUS.

So to the engraved wording now right below the hallmark.

Presented by

THE CHIEF CONSTABLE

and the SUPERIOR OFFICERS

To

The City Police Swimming Club

for Annual Competition

May 1893.

All in a nice old font with swirls of pattern too... not too much....turn the cup around to the right and you then see a list of

WINNERS and YEARS...which starts off with

P.C. J. Armstrong 106 yds 1893... he won the next year as well at 160 yds then the year after he won it for RESCUE in 1895 ..... and another chap, P.C. D. McLENNAN in 1896 won it for ALL ROUND SWIMMING and for the next 3 years till 1898 ... then P.C. J. SIM

won the same ALL ROUND SWIMMING in 1899...then McLENNAN won it again the year after 1900.

Turn it around again and you will see a really good fine engraved picture of a Policeman RESCUING - saving a young GIRL in icy water....looking again I can see its actually a WINTER scene and you can see the girl has fallen through the ice... ... you can see he is a Policeman as he is wearing a policeman's helmet ...with a typical Victorian large tach....Clouds in the sky and a small Church or building in the background.

Turn it again and you see WINNERS - YEAR ...but it has no other engraving here... so the last engraved date is 1900.

Now then ... it has Sheffield hallmarks and it actually does NOT say it is from Sheffield City Police on it... but it is most likely to be related to them... if on the other hand you can research the Police Constables names on this cup and find it could be from another city such as Edinburgh for instance then so be it....only time will tell.

The cup is still gilt inside...and in really nice condition overall.

Also note... the sterling silver cup was 11 years old BEFORE it was engraved for the first time in 1893....which is often the case on Victorian presentation items such as this I have noticed... a real quality item and I am sure the WINNERS of the cup were very proud to be the winners of it.
