tozzin
Has anyone any idea what were these two buildings were originally used for, the building with the blue gates with the date-stone of 1889 is at 118 Mowbray St, it does resemble a small fire-station. the other building date-stone 1892 is at 52 Burton Rd, on the other gable is the Sheffield coat of arms. I don't think there is, or ever was a 118 on Mowbray Street.

Strangely enough in my 1974 Kellys there isn't a 118 on Mowbray St despite the address above the door, very strange.

A large scale 1963 OS map shows the building as a warehouse with no number, same on a more recent OS map.

But it's all great info.
Edmund
From Yorkshire Telegraph and Star 23rd January 1906: STREET ACCIDENT IN SHEFFIELD Much damage was done in an accident which occurred late this afternoon in the Wicker, Sheffield. A tramcar moving towards the city from Rotherham and a cart laden with steel files came in collision, and the dashboard of the former was wrecked. The motorman was slightly injured and received treatment at the Childrens' Hospital near. The cart was that of Mr.R.Huntley of Mowbray Street and had a load of two tons. The carter, E.Wasden, was much shaken.

Altered door surround, the house type building at the other side of the Sawmakers yard was No.30 Walshaw & LockingLtd., they used it for storing moulding sand, always wondered why it has never fallen down sand used to come out through the cracks in the gable. Yes, that's the one I'm looking at, the firm next to the pub looks like houses converted into a firm, and my building on the RIGHT has a high gable and looks like it was a purpose built building for the steel firm.
