Gerald LEVESLEY
Private 66865 – 12/13th Bn Northumberland Fusiliers
Born Sheffield 3rd June 1899.
Parents were Walter and Florence.
By 1911 the family were living at 29 Yardley Street, Sheffield.
In 1913, Gerald took up employment at the firm where his father already worked – W.T. Flather Limited, Sheffield presumably as a clerk.
During 1915-16, it appears that Gerald was employed as a member of the Sheffield Defence Corps (card badge included)
In July 1917, he was called up and posted to the 12/13th Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers.
In a letter to his Mother dated 27th March 1918 he reports that he is on a train bound for the coast and thence to France but does not think that he will be amongst those sent directly to the Front.
He was reported missing between 27th and 29th May 1918 and was subsequently confirmed as a prisoner of war.
He was later confirmed to be held at Cassell-Hessen, Nasseau, Germany.
He was eventually repatriated and returned to his former place of employment.
There are a total of 14 original photographs both military and family etc.

Original Roll of Honour for St. George’s Church, Sheffield.
Original Programme for the official Dinner held for Repatriated Sheffield Prisoners of War on Saturday January 11th 1919 at the Sheffield Town Hall.
Original Invitation for same.
Original Card Sheffield Defence Corps badge (damaged)
Original cloth identification badge worn by Gerald whilst a Prisoner of War in France. In all the years of collecting I have never seen such an example.
Examples of German Prisoner of War camp money and stamps.
Original Certificate of Discharge
Original Protection Certificate.
Original ‘City of Sheffield Peace Celebrations’ Certificate presented and named to him.
And a host of other original documents, official letters and Army Forms etc.
Gerald went on to serve in the Home Guard during WW2 and also included is his original certificate of service and a signed menu from a dinner held on the 17th October 1944 at the Sheffield Cutler’s Hall.
Gerald Levesley went on to write and publish a short history of St. George’s Church, Sheffield.

Gerald Levesley, born 3rd June 1899, to Walter and Florence Elizabeth Levesley of 85 Winter Street. Walter was a Spoke Maker.

Baptism 28th June 1889 at St Stephen's, Netherthorpe by G V Hellawell, The Rev Edward Hicks M.A., was Vicar of St Stephens from 1883-1900. Hicks died 1st February 1920, aged 71.

This image is taken from the same source and is titled recruits at Scotton Camp Catterick, so is Gerald in the photo, given where its come from I would say he is but which of these recruits is he
