Hendersons Factory - Arghh!

Just do a search for hendersons factory news' and you should get a hit. Long and short of it is; land owned by Church Burgesses, they might sell but who could possibly be interested in that piece of land? Oh yes, I think we all know and they couldn't possibly utilise the building as is. (apologies for being a bit sarky)

Someone should get in there quick and bottle the smell! ;-)

If I remember right the report in the paper said not even the Victorian Society could find any architectural reason to try and get it listed! Any call for preservation would be on social history or emotional grounds, neither of which English Heritage would accept. The only option would be to set up a "Hendos Historical Preservation Society" and raise funds to buy it. (It would be worth it if only to see the faces on the Uni 'development' people!)

I suppose we should be getting prepared for another of those lovely multi-coloured boxes which someone thinks we would rather have.

It would be good if it was turned into a Restaurant of some kind and have what features it has retained, the only thing outside is Hendersons Relish sign, other than that it's just an ordinary brick building.

Absolutely, nothing special about the building but it does form an important part of Sheffield's cultural and collective memory in my opinion. We've lost so much in Sheffield do we really have to lose even more?

It's a fair bet it's doomed to be replaced by another uni box. It would be good if the Council could insist that whatever replaces it has to have the Hendos sign in prominent view!

I do agree with you, I was just pointing out it was an ordinary building so the University will have no qualms about demolishing it. Culture and memory do not exist in the University. Soon this city will be re-named Universe-city. Education is a good thing but not at the expense of our much loved buildings.

A young woman I know was given this old Henderson's Relish bottle by a chap she knows, he found it in a Car Boot sale, its around 4" high, I don't know how old it is or why its such a small bottle could be that this was the original size bottle, I just don't know.
