Walkley Ways History Project

We are a community history project investigating the history of Walkley. Walkley Community Centre is managing a three-year history project called Walkley Ways, Walkley Wars, which started in October 2012.

We have three themes at the moment:

1) Fir Street in 1908, the year the Walkley Liberal Reform Club was founded. The building became the Walkley Community Centre in 1974.

2) World War 1. To celebrate the centenary of the start of the First World War, we will research the lives and military careers of the Reform Club members who fought in the war. This has largely been completed.

3) Walkley life in the 1960s and 1970s. Council plans to first demolish the suburb as slum clearance then the improvements scheme which protected what remained. Local shops and facilities.

We hope to establish a Walkley History Society, based in the Community Centre, which will become a forum for learning and researching about our local history.We are funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund.

If you would like to take part in oral and local history research please get in touch too. We would particularly like to recruit new people to conduct oral history interviews, we provide training for this if you've not done it before. Anyone who is interested in this or in joining the project to help with research into Walkley's history is welcome. We have monthly meetings for the historians and you can keep up with news of the project on our website
