Buildings In Waingate

I have received some information of a story handed down to my cousin.

At the time, 1919 my grandfather was the landlord of the Old Anvil Inn 24 Waingate and the story is, that my Father and Grandfather bricked up some old tunnels in the cellar to prevent younger members of the family, 6 more, from playing in them. It is also said that they buried a time capsule in them. I am keen to know when the buildings were constructed and is it likely that there may be a link to the Castle.

Love these stories.

Have a look here Vic. There are photos and plans of the castle site. The Old Anvil would have been close to the moat, so the tunnels would most likely be post-castle, but depending which way they ran, it's not impossible that they could have been cellars etc of the castle buildings.

Thanks to both of you for the information. The maps are really helpful to my compilation of family history. I would imagine that the cellars and more would have been destroyed during demolition and building on the site of the pub. I am fortunate in that I have received a life story of one of my uncles who describes in detail his time in the Anvil and the move to the Sportsman Inn on Walkley Bank Road. Including a lovely description of a tram ride in 1925 to Walkley Terminus. There were 12 kids so there is plenty more information to come I am sure.

Here's a possibility - the plan below from 1896 show a tunnel between Tennants Brewery and their yard, with Birks' Brewery in between. Presumably the tunnel was to get their casks from the brewery to the drays. Could the tunnel have been extended at some time so that the Anvil's cellar could have been supplied direct from the brewery?

At the bottom of the map the tunnel between the Court House and cells can be seen.
