Cyclops Street

Around 1969/1970 my mother was told by the council that all houses on Cyclops street (And maybe Botham Street and Grimesthorpe Road too) were under a "compulsory purchase" order and were going to be demolished.

The reason for this is that the council said that they wanted to re-develop the land.

We moved to Shiregreen in 1971, then the houses on Cyclops Street were demolished some time after that.

This photo shows that.

They gave my mother £1500 pounds for our house, plus £200 for inconvenience and costs of moving.

Multiply that by all the houses in the demolition area, and that is a lot of money.

Up to this day there is nothing on Cyclops Street at all, so my question is, what did the council plan to build in 1971, but never did?

Thanks all! :)

Not sure they intended to build anything. It was more about clearing substandard housing. Many of the houses still had outside loos and no bathrooms and often the houses were in poor condition. My parents in law moved away too around 1972/3. Their house in which they had brought up 3 children was basically one tiny room for living/dining, with a small offshot kitchen. One bedroom with an attic above. No running hot water, no bathroom and an outside loo.

Maybe they were being tactful? A lot of these houses, though officially sub-standard, were little gems kept immaculate by their proud owners, and it might well have been hurtful to be told "We're going to knock your house down because it's not fit to live in". Or is that too subtle for the Council?

They were basically classed as slums though many would have kept them very nice I am sure. My mother in law was a 1st class hoarder and had never thrown anything out since moving in c1936 even clothes. What she didn't take with her she left in the cellar! Maybe they are still there now encased in concrete!

I have fond memories of Botham Street , where my Aunt and Uncle lived until the house was demolished. Coming from a Council House where we had "mod cons" , the contrast with the "expedition" to their outside loo in the middle of winter was always to be avoided! :)

You'll have to wait some time for a census. They are released every 100 years.

:o My goodness, i didn't know that!! :o

Isn't that every 10 years, 100 years from the census date? (Yonder pedant, who is he...)

Which is a bit daft nowadays, waiting 100yrs, isn't it ?

What with TwitterFace, CCTV and 198.com etc, everybody knows who and where everyone else is, and what size shoes they wear.
