Sheffield History
Does anyone know when Sheffield castle was last exposed ? E.g. it's currently under Castle Market but before that was built was the castle wall remains just stood out in the elements and visible to the public ? tozzin
Part of the Castle wall could be seen on the left side of Castlegate in the 1950s but that was either removed or concreted over by the vertical wall of hideous concrete that stand there now. Bayleaf
The preamble to the 1927 excavation report by Armstrong gives some idea of what happened to it over the years.
Calvin72
Am i right in thinking that the Castle covered a far greater area than the Castle Market site? How much of the Castle is waiting to be exposed when the market building comes down? Half? A Quarter? Or a lot less?

This photo of the area from 1937 gives a clear idea of the area the castle covered.
tozzin
The 1937 photo does actually show the bit of the Castle wall that I can remember from the fifties.
Bayleaf
Here you go tozzin. I remember the bit of wall very well. We used to visit my gran on Clarence Street on a Saturday, and the 61 bus we got home always waited it's time on Castlegate, right next to the bit of wall. Bayleaf
This is where the original is. You have to register to use zoom etc. Do a search for Sheffield and there's loads of pre WW2 photos. There's a lot of industrial stuff but lots of others as well, including aerial shots of Wembley with Sheffield Wednesday in the Cup Final of 1935! History dude
Report on BBC Look North this evening about the plans to redevelop the Castle Market site. This will include a big dig, exposing and archaeological work on the River Sheaf, the construction of a fancy "gatehouse". Cost altogether 5 million.
