Guest Lucy Teapot
Hi everybody, I am wondering if anybody can help me. We have just purchased a house at nether edge called the towers which is number 41 ashland Road.. I've been trying to find out more history of the house and its occupants when it was built around 1912 but not finding much and was wondering if anybody has anymore information or pictures they could share with me at all as Google doesn't produce much. Thanks in advance and hoping I've posted this to the right place. Lucy

SteveHB
Oi! I'm sure that Mr. & Mrs. Teapot should be capable of recognising an old drain cover, no need to call out the expert yet!
Edmund
My great-great uncle Osbert Skinner knew the man who first lived in your house. Osbert was a keen cyclist and a member of the Sharrow Cycling Club in the early 1900's. Edwin James Woollen was Chairman and President of that club in 1908 and 1909. In 1899 the club held races at Bramall Lane - Edwin came third in the Five Mile handicap. And he did well in the 50 mile race in July 1899: Heres a picture of Edwin taken from their Annual Dinner programme: There's more information about the club here: Sheff History Sharrow Cycling Club Woollen & Co Ltd was established in Sheffield in 1883 by Edwin James Woollen, a signwriter and Frederick Ibbotson, a lithographic printer. Woollen was in court in 1896 regarding a sign which had fallen and injured a passer-by: Edwin registered a patent in 1896 - for "spiked window tickets" By 1897 Woollens had become a limited company and was based at 35 Carver Street in Sheffield. Edwin wrote to the Sheffield Independent in November 1885 : "Mr. E.J.Woollen denies that he asked a question at a meeting of the unsectarian candidates as to Mr W.H.Smith's Sunday work" (THE WH Smith?) A Google search will find lots of information about the Woollen signs business - here's a billhead from the 1990's: Woollen Signs in West Street, 1946 shown here: Pic Sheffield Woollen Signs West Street In 1901 Edwin and family were living at 43 Rustlings Road: But by 1911 they were at 44 Ashlands Road: At the time of the census in 1911, number 41 had not been built, But it is a fair assumption that he moved in as the first occupant: Edwin died in 1924 - his probate details were: His wife Clara died in 1929: By 1934 no. 41 was occupied by Anna Bradwell, the bankrupt widow of Umbrella manufacturer Horace Bradwell. previously of 44 Norfolk Road:

Guest Lucy Teapot
Also drain covers. Is there something I should know? Lucy x
SteveHB
Also drain covers. Is there something I should know? Lucy x I was thinking that "T. Wilkinson & Sons" could have built the house, one of them living nearby (5 Herbert Road) in 1911, there could be something with the builders name on it. Also, number 7 Herbert Road does not appear to be listed in the 1911 directory
Lizziejampot
Hi Lucy Teapot. Sorry to be late to the party, but I've only just joined the forum. I also live in Nether Edge and have been involved with the local history section of NENG. You may be interested to look at the NENG publication "They Lived in Sharrow and Nether Edge" (available locally at a very small price). Page 40 has a paragraph about Edward James Woollen and he sounds like quite a man. In addition to the activities mentioned above he was also a pioneer of early cinema in Sheffield. I'll try and scan the relevant bit, but no promises - I'm not very good at the technical stuff.
Lizziejampot
PS There was a confusion about Mr Woollen's name, but I think it was Edwin, not Edward.
