Streets Formerly Known As...

There are plenty of streets in Sheffield with signs saying 'formerly known as' or 'late' denoting a change of name at some point. Can we collect some photos of these? Even better with an explanation of the name change or its history!

There's already a thread regarding this, where i posted the very same pic as yourself.

I woud not say that Unadopted Roads and 'Streets Formerly Known As...' could be classed as the same topic

Minto Road formally known as Milner Road, Portsea Road formally known as Providence Road, Findon Street formally known as Fowler Street, Greenhow Street formally known as Green Street, Roselle Street formally known as Rose Street. the top part of Oakland Road formally known as Hawksley Road.

Except Hawksley Road (which was re-used elsewhere in Hillsborough), all the above roads were renamed when Hillsborough came from the West Riding into Sheffield Borough and the same names were already in use in Sheffield.

Next to the Closed Shop pub, Commonside - this is strange, Hands Lane became Hands Road - any idea why?

Don't know why it was changed, but it was changed in 1909. Both were named after Thomas Hand, silversmith, who lived and worked at Commonside in the 19th century. (So it was probably originally Hand's Lane. Perhaps it was originally a lane that just served his house and workshop. As the area became more built up, the lane became more of a thoroughfare and so changed its status and name. Just a theory!)).

The terrace of small cottages that run up the right hand side of the street are, I was told, the oldest, still standing, council properties in the city. They were built as council property.

I was told a funny story about the later short terrace of houses set at right angles on the other side of the road.

This was told to me by the brother of the builder of the houses. Apparently when the houses were almost complete the plumber tried to test the water system and was very surprised when coal gas came out of the tap. Apparently the man from SCWW couldn't tell a gas main from a water main in the street.

I was thinking similarly, so is there a definition of 'Lane' or indeed 'Road'?

Ok. Maybe i should have said there existed a thread where many of these were posted. Thankfully my advice didn't navigate him over a cliff. <_<

Mansfield Road used to be Main Road, as demonstrated by the enamel sign on the wall of Intake Primary School:

According to Peter Harvey, going even further back, Mansfield Road was originally part of the Sheffield to Mansfield turnpike, better known as the Gander Lane turnpike, set up under an Act of Parliament in 1779

Scarsdale was Green Lane.

The sign is still there at the bottom.

Google Streetview

Better photo required if anyone is passing on foot.

Maxwell Way off Sutherland Road used to be called Writtle Street . My mum was born at 43 Writtle Street 2 oct 1915. Gt Grandma Elizabeth Bellamy (nee Pigott) was killed in the same house on 26 Sep 1916 by a Zeppelin bomb bursting outside.

I have a 1950's map which still shows it as Writtle St so name must have changed in 2nd half of 20th century.
