RichardB
William Marsh, springknife cutler and Publican, Golden Ball, Park John Webster, cutler and patten iron maker, publican and keeps a bowling green, Little Sheffield (Bowling Green might help identify this one) Thomas Bell, fork maker and Publican, Burges Street ("Burgess") - quite a few possibles and a final extra mystery : Matthew Woollen, innholder, George, Market Place only a mystery since in the same directory we also have Thomas Watson, innholder, George, Market Place (known from 1760). Any thoughts please ? The rest of the entries in 1774 we already know about. Maybe I'll get around to typing them up just so we have a list. History dude
The Golden Ball must have been somewhere around Park Hill.
tozzin
Wasn't there a bowling green somewhere around at Highfields at one time ? Is/was Highfields Little Sheffield ? On the 1903 O.S. Map of the area there was a Bowling Green on the corner of Cherry St and Shoreham St, which is now part of Sheffield United's ground, I know it's a good few years after 1774 but could be the Bowling Green in question? vox
Sheffield in the Eighteenth Century. Leader "There were bowling greens near Bower Spring (Bowling Green Street), at Little Sheffield (Hermitage Street), Tudor Place (where the Lyceum Theatre now stands), and on the sight of the demolished Sheffield Castle, now occupied by Messrs. dobberd
Well I thought this sounded familiar Richard, a post from me back in the day "Posted 23 March 2008 - 01:47 AM Putting together info, I have a Landlord John Webster, a location Hermitage Street Ecclesall, a date circa 1770, a pub with a Bowling Green, but no pub name. Damn.." 6 years later I am back on it and see if I can dig up anything else
