Wednesday 9th May 1877 Sheffield Daily Telegraph (page 1)

Mountville Freehold Land Society, Abbeydale

Solicitors: Messrs. Rodgers, Thomas, Swift and Ashington, Bank-street.

Surveyor: Mr. J. B. Mitchell-Withers, Saint James'-street.

Secretary (pro.tem.): Josh. Pearson, Estate Agent, 11 Paradise-square.

Arrangements have been made for the purchase of a most eligible Estate in the district of "The Beautiful Abbeydale," upon terms which must commend themselves to subscribers. The Estate, containing about 19 Acres, is situate on the Sheffield and Owler Bar Turnpike-road, and extends from Messrs. Tyzack's Dams to Mickley-lane, within 15 minutes' walk of the Dore and Totley Station, and being just beyond the Borough boundary, offers to members the advantages of a country residence combined with facilities for easy and expeditious access to the town by road or rail, together with relief from the increasing burden of parochial and other rates. The Estate having such extensive frontages to the Turnpike-road and to Mickley-lane, will be relieved from a great portion of the outlay usually incurred in the formation of roads.

The Estate is specially adapted for the erection of Dwellings of different classes without deteriorating the value of the better class of Property, thus supplying a want that has long been felt in the neighbourhood, viz., facilities for the erection of the better class of working men's dwellings. It is proposed to lay out the Estate in lots varying from 600 to 1,200 yards each, the prce, the low one of 2s 4d. per yard, to be paid for by Monthly Contributions extending over a period of ten years. A number of Shares are already taken, and intending Shareholders should make early application for Shares, as it is intended to appoint the Committee and Officers, and to allott the Estate at as early a date as practicable. The Contributions will be 12s. per Share per Month until allotment is made, and afterwards in proportion to the value of the lots.

A Plan of the Estate may be seen, and further information obtained on application to the Solicitors, Surveyor, Secretary (pro tem.), or Mr Clayton, Beauchieff Hotel. Shares may be secured by the payment of a deposit of £1 per Share, upon application to Mr Clayton, Beauchieff hotel; or Joseph Pearson, 11 Paradise Square, Sheffield.

"Totley History Group has been researching this part of the village for several years; from when it was farmland through its various incarnations including the Mountville Estate, the Victoria Gardens, Gledhill's Rhubarb fields and poultry farm through to the Laverdene Estate."

My guess is Mount Ville was the area now known as Hartington Road / Sterndale Road / Abbeydale Road South (see map) stone built houses of varying types and sizes.

Logic as follows:

From Sheffield Indexers:

Washington, Jesse (, advertising inspector).
Residing at 7 Mountville Abbeydale, in 1905.
Recorded in: Whites Directory of Sheffield & Rotherham.

Looking at the 1911 census, Jesse was living with his in-laws (Sarah Ann and John Evers) at Ivydene, Abbeydale Road South. The census summary (see below) shows that the enumerator's opinion was that it was number 36 Abbeydale Road South (from Google it's a stone built semi on the main road). Some of their neighbours were at 7, 9, 11 Mount Ville.

It's all to do with Joseph Mountain ... obvoiuslyish.

The Victoria Gardens occupied a triangular site of about 15 acres, bordered by to the north by Abbeydale Road (now Baslow Road), to the southwest by Mickley Lane, and to the east by Tyzack's Mill dam wall and the Totley Brook. They were built on what Joseph had called the Mountville Estate; the name is derived from that of his own house in Beauchief. Shares in the Mountville Freehold Land Society had been offered to subscribers in 1877 (also the date of our map, above) with a view to laying out the estate in lots varying from 600 to 1,200 yards each, to be paid for by monthly contributions extending over a period of 10 years. The scheme failed to attract support but at least seven new houses were built as these were offered for sale together with two older properties, fronting the turnpike road, which were used as a greengrocers shop and as a working men's club and reading room.

May well be a coincidence... but a Caroline Anne Stacey was living at "the Bungalow" Bradway in 1911 (near the Bradway Hotel). She was an unmarried dressmaker originally from Kensington, London - in 1901 she was in Buxton (without a child)

And here's a sheet from the 1916 Canadian census - correct date of birth, a farmer, born in England, arrived 1913. M.S. denotes "military service" and he appears to be overseas at the time of the census.

Does anybody else think we may have two different places.

Mountville, an area at Totley Rise (which is now the Laverdene estate), and Mount Ville, possibly a house name at Abbeydale Rd South ?
