Hi,

I am descended from Walter and Ida Johnson (nee Sorsby) who lived in Sheffield in early - mid1900's. They had 9 children including my grandfather William F Johnson who moved away from Sheffield post-war down to the south and died before I was born - I know very little about this part of my family and I am keen to try and make contact.

Looking for anyone who may be descended from any of William's siblings:

Arthur Johnson b 1917

Ida Johnson b1915 (Married Percy Garlick in 1936)

Gladys Johnson b1919 (Married Alexander P Roberts, a Radio Engineer in 1938) - possibly moved to Bury, Lancs

Norah Johnson b1911

Minnie Johnson b1922

Audrey M Johnson b1926

Naturally I have done quite a lot of research on my Johnson family tree trying to find as much as I could, and have so far traced the Johnson line back to 1652 - Gringley on the Hill, Nottinghamshire!! I would like to share this information with anyone who is connected to it.

Thanks,

Marcus Johnson

Thanks very much for the info, that's almost certainly my Gt Uncle Alexander (by marriage) who was a Radio Engineer and the £3016 in 1961 is around £60k in todays money. I already had a death index record for him dated Sept 61 showing Prescot, Lancs so this matches up nicely.

However unfortunately the other is a different Walter/Ida I'm afraid - my Gt Grandfather Walter died 6th Feb 1937 at Nether Edge Hospital and is buried in City Road Cemetery:

From Sheffield Indexers:

JOHNSON, Walter (Packing Case Maker, age 57).
Died at Nether Edge Hospital; Buried on February 6, 1937 in Consecrated ground;
Grave Number 12564, Section X of City Road Cemetery, Sheffield.

I'm planning to visit the cemetery next time I'm in the area in case there's any evidence of the grave - but understand it's a very crowded cemetery with high rate of plot re-use?.

As I live some 250 miles away from Sheffield, are there any genealogy/family history societies in or around Sheffield that would possibly consider visiting the grave site on my behalf and if located take a photo, in exchange for a fee? I appreciate it's a big site, but I have a plan of the cemetery so I know which block/section he is in and the cemetery office may have additional information associated with grave 12564? .... just a thought.

Hi, I picked up your request from 2014 yesterday when I was searching the name Walter Johnson.  I had just visited my father, Arthur Johnson in his care home and we had been talking about his family.  It is definitely the same family as I remember my Auntie Ida and Uncle Percy very well as they both lived in Sheffield and we visited them a lot.  I can remember all of the other siblings. The only strange thing is that my father was born in 1926 so I would be interested in hearing of your research.  I do have a few old photos.  My Uncle Bill, your grandfather and the sisters are on my parents' wedding photos.  My father lost touch with his family many years ago.  Bill and four of his sisters died in their 50s,60s and we last saw his youngest sister whom he called Babs but I think will be Minnie, in 1981.  I have never heard mention of an Audrey.

I do hope you get this reply and I look forward to hearing from you.

June Machin (nee Johnson)
