vox
Does anyone know about the Shemeld Razor business that was sold to Wilkinson about 1850? Thanks in advance I don't know about Wilkinson but here's evidence of a Joseph Rodgers Shemeld & Co Quote from Ebay listing "No info available This cut throat razor has an 11/16” Hollow ground blade. It has horn scales with an integral spacer. Engraved on the tang are the words Joseph Rodgers Shemeld & Co Sheffield, 1829” Condition. Case. No Case. Razor. I have Cleaned the razor & it has left some minor pitting on the tang. The hone wear is light at less than .5mm. There are no chips or cracks in the blade & the scales are fine. Not shave ready but can be made so with honing. NOTE: Cant track down the relationship between Joseph Rodgers & Shemeld & Co"

Guest Jamesbob
Hi, I have a picture of the Shemeld Razor works from 1897 (I think) the four in the middle are from left to right, Joseph (Son), Maurice (Son), Thomas (Father) and Thomas William (Son). I'm not sure who the two either side are but I suspect they are Grandsons. The sign over the top reads: LIVINGSONE RAZOR WORKS SHEMELD & Co RAZOR MAKERS & CUTLERS SPECIALITIES IN CARVERS and CHILDREN'S CUTLERY. Trade Marks: "1829" & "ROCKET" Behid Thomas Shemeld Senior it appears to read (Partially obscured): Shemeld & Co Maurice & Co "ROCKET" Sheffield Does anyone have more information about these works, or where they were? I'd be interested. TWS was my Great Grandfather.

Guest Jamesbob
Just found out the younger son was almost certainly called Joseph Rodgers Shemeld. As far as I can tell there is no link to the, then famous Joseph Rodgers razor works, so it looks like he may have been named with an eye on legitimising using the Joseph Rodgers name. So the razor in the link above bears his name. The date "1829" is listed as a trade mark on the notice in front of the works, perhaps the year it was founded??? Joseph R Shemeld is the younger son, second from the left on the photo above. A DIRECTORY OF THE BOROUGH AND PARISH OF SHEFFIELD, 1852, lists the following: Shemeld Thomas, razorsmith, 43 St Philip's road, Broomhill. It is quite possible they could have moved premises by 1897, some 45 years later when the photo was taken.
