Tricky one this. What year do you think this is from? Only ever seen this picture at auction and in an early publication.

I'm not a football fan, so, I'd start by identifying the ground from the shapes/structures - from a football fan's point of view - I'd identify the span that style of kit was in use.

Early publication = Romance of the Wednesday ??

Never seen a copy, would love to get a scnned copy on here - keep trying to buy it - keep failing through lack of funds and being a small rodent that lives in a place of religious worship ....

Not seen that before - the stand at the back is the Olive Grove stand which was demolished at Hillsborough in 1913 so it is pre that date.

The chap in the middle of the back row who looks like Lord Lucan looks like Ambrose Langley and he left Wednesday in 1905.

Why don't you go for the re-print version which you should be able to find on abebooks.com

The publication I'm refering to is much earlier than Romance of the Wednesday. It was not a book, more a 30 page booklet about Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United, This was the Wednesday team that was contempoary with the publication.

I can narrow the photograph down to one of three matches.

Correct with Ambrose Langley and the Olive Grove stand, this was taken at Olive Grove.

Re-print = copyright issues, need an original/

Fine photo, fine question - just not an area of expertise for me.

It's 1898-1899 season. Last season at Olive Grove and the season Wednesday got relegated. Likely to be v Nottigham Forest 1st match of the season, but could also be Notts County or WBA I think (this is from memory)

Couple of players that I've never previously seen in a team photogrtaph - Dryborough and Hemmingfield.

The Publication was by Boots Chemist that season and is currently worth around £200 - £250, although I think I saw an original copy of this photograph sell at auction for £80ish.

One myth about victorian football pitches was that they were heavy and grass was poor. Victorian pitches were much better quality and you can see this a little in this picture. I have a photograph of Olive Grove at the end of this season and you can see that the pitch is in superb condition. Pitches did become poor sometime in the Edwardian times I believe, but I'm not an expert in that area.

Oh, yeah. Sorry I don't really think about that as I'm not a Wednesday supporter and to me Wedneday of the 1890's were always the Blades so I never give it a second thought. Where as it sticks out loads to an Owl's supporter.

0418 - FA Cup Final - Sheffield Wednesday 2 Wolverhampton Wanderers 1 - 1896

Maybe the 1896 Final deserves a topic of its own ... ?
