No one seems to have mentioned the passing away of Tony Whyte.

Although he was born in Glasgow he spent most of his childhood in the Fulwood Cottage Homes.

He was one of our best club turns before being the resident compere at the Fiesta.

He was always imaculately dressed and was a real Sheffield favourite.

He started off as a singing waiter at the Rotherham House pub near the Castle Market.

At one time he was living in a flat above the Montesa Cafe on Infirmary Road.

He died at the ripe old age of 84

R.I.P. Tony Whyte.

My Mum and Dad were reminiscing about Tony and his contemporaries a couple of weekends ago, Apparently they were very camp homosexuals who were not just entertaining whilst singing and joking 'on stage' but all the time. One of the characters was Blond Ernest who had a peroxide hairdo at a time (early 50s) when not even many women would try that. They were so unruly that they were thrown out of numerous town centre pubs and eventually the group split up and they settled on the club circuit.

I have been looking for Tony Whyte for over twenty years researching family history and found him too late. My aunt is now 93 but young Freddie (Tony's real name) Wight lived in her family for about four years leaving around 1931 when his father came back and took him away. He was never seen again. The trauma of this event has had huge reprecussions over the years on a number of his siblings. The family assumed that Fred's mother's family had taken Fred and his brother(s) in when his father died. It was a shock to my aunt to discover he had been put into an orphanage. Tony's father was a charmer. If anyone has any memories of Tony as a child which would fill in the blanks of his early life please, please post them. 93 and in poor health means sooner rather than later... but it was a shock to discover young Freddie had died so recently.
