Hallam Chase (Fell Race)

This year's Hallam Chase is looming:

I have seen it referred to as the "worlds oldest fell race", I believe it is the oldest fell races for which records still exist. Although some say it is the oldest handicap fell race.

A google for some history on the event didn't turn up much - does anyone have any information?

The only thing I can remember about it is that runners are marked with a splash of paint at the halfway point and that the colour of the paint is a closely guarded secret until the last moment.

It used to be run on Whitsuntide Tuesday but that date seems to have disappeared from the calendar.

postscript:

Just found a reference to it on the Hallamshire Harriers website, apparently been run since 1862 and this year will take place at 8 pm on Tuesday 5th June.

Application forms are available on the website. I think I'll give it a miss this year.

I'm going to run it - I've not heard about the paint business but I'll report back after the event!

Can we find past results, dates, race times ? For any of the past races.

Hows about this.

It's a good fun but low key event: sadly it seems that the paint tradition has expired, we just got a magic marker pen scribbled on our race number.

I was first to Stannington Church (it's a handicap and I was the slowest runner in the race mind), so I got a great big trophy to polish for a year...
