RichardB
Towards the top of Carterknowle Road there is a red cast-iron pillar box. If anyone is passing or lives close by, would like a photograph of it please.

RichardB
How the flippin heck do you REMEMBER these things ?? I have a brain the size of a small planet, the wit and wisdom of someone with er wit and wisdom, my torso is that of a bronzed Greek Adonis; my body is a temple, as a matter of fact several temples, a chippie, part of a multi-story car park and a book shop !!! Matter of fact it was in that very book shop, many moons ago, I bought a book, containing a rather poor picture (B&W) of said postbox, also explained why is was "different" ... lol
Bayleaf
I passed that way today. Are these any good Richard? (Sorry about the drunken lean!)
Guest tsavo
A rareity indeed as they are marked E VIII who I think was The Duke of Windsor who would have been Edward the 8th had he not abducated. Or am I way off Richard?

Guest Three Legged Cat
There's another one in Rowdale Cresent (near Birley Moor Road). It's at a bit of a jaunty angle (I wasn't drunk, honest!), but in pretty good condition. This leaflet claims that is one of three in Sheffield. Does anyone know if there is a third one and where it is/was?

Guest Three Legged Cat
Chris Smith spotted my postbox pictures on Flickr and sent me a nice email telling me where the third one was. The other two are near houses that date from the right era, so I was expecting the third one to be somewhere similiar. Wrong! Anyone want to guess where it is? Plenty of clues in the photo... ;-)
Hjdary
I have spent the last hour or so trying to work this one out and the only place I can think of is City Rd. It looks like a BP station with a car wash at the side and in the reflections on the windows you can see old Victorian houses. Now I've said that I'm not sure if the petrol station there is a BP or Texeco.

Guest Three Legged Cat
Indeed it is! Which is a very modern setting for a King Edward VIII postbox (I wonder if it has always been in that particular spot?). The canopy was good though - it kept the rain off while I took the picture. ;) It was easy to find once I had these directions from Chris Smith at Flickr: "I notice you ask where the other one in Sheffield is - according to the Letter Box Study Groups list it is at in S 6 Box number 528 - PO, Leppings Lane (BP/SPAR garage) Grid ref SK333910 UK." I don't think I would have given that particular postbox a second glance otherwise.

vox
Having passed this box in Rotherham on numerous occasions, I notice that it doesn't have a royal crest. I wonder why - Are there any "plain ones" in Sheffield ? It's near the junction of Moorgate and Hollowgate
vox
The only thing I can think of andy, is that it was cast as an Edward V11, but when they found that he was abdicating they ground the crest off. Or something on those lines. It looks to be of a design that could date from that sort of period.
