Seven Or Eight Hills ?

This is one of those topics that crops up time and again, like the maze of tunnels under Sheffield (don't get me started !). I think the idea of 'Sheffield, built on seven hills, like Rome,' is similar to 'Birmingham, a city with more canals than Venice.'

Both may or may not be true, but if it is, that's where the similarity stops. Personally I think whoever coined the phrase had as much familiarity with Sheffield as the bright spark in London who decided the ideal name for the new retail quarter (should it ever be built) should be Sevenstone, to echo the city being built on seven hills, and the association with grindstones.

Whoever came up with that idea has a career as a setter of cryptic crosswords!
