Harry Brearley Bowie Knife

This Bowie knife was made in Sheffield, don't know who made it as the makers mark has been obliterated. Harry Brearley presented it to Griffith Taylor who was the geologist on Scott's last expedition to the Antarctic. When Griffith Taylor returned from that expedition, he presented the knife back to Harry Brearley with the engraved plaque attached.

Harry gave the knife to my great aunt, Winifred Beard, who was his secretary.

What a brilliant picture. It certainly seems like the same knife, its the right size. The blade of the knife was rusty and whoever cleaned it up also rubbed off the makers mark unfortunately.

Very interesting knife. A photo of what appears to be the same knife appears in Geoffrey Tweedale's The Sheffield Knife Book, p118.

Thanks for posting the pic Annie - have followed the history of this knife with interest for many years. How fascinating that it was given to your great aunt! (Shame that someone has blistered that makers mark).
