Guest Martin-Bacon
The Internet Archive at Archive.org: a fantastic resorce. Many, many old texts and other resources can be found at http://www.archive.org/ Just use the search box and search on 'Sheffield' or any term relating to Sheffield. Documents and pictures are avaiable in many formats, from ocr text, kindle, pdf files with some of the higher quality, higher resolution raw scans in the little used jpeg 2000 (aka jp2) format. Windows users can read these files with XnView from http://www.xnview.org A plugin for the GIMP can also read JP2 files, but I have not tried it out. My favorite is what looks like a promo from Thos. Firth & sons from Tulley and Co, a Sheffield photographic company with a studio on Division Street. Looking at the pictures, in particular the warships, I think it dates from about 1906. This book is a great photo archive of Sheffield's industrial past. I intend to tidy-up some of the JPEG 2000 scans and post them on wiki commons at some stage in the future. A slightly lowere resolution pdf version of this book is on the archive.org site. http://www.archive.org/details/thosfirthsonslim00firtrich
