No - Marc Bolan was my 20TH CENTURY BOY lol and sometimes he was known to RIDE A WHITE SWAN lol

Aaah, it's a teenybop girlie thing

He was your 20TH CENTURY BOY, because it was HOT LOVE, he was just a JEEPSTER for your love.

Well, being male, perhaps he was my METAL GURU.

Ahh the man/band who inspired my internet name...put a little Marc in your heart!

Welcome to Sheffield History Jeepster and thank you for posting.

As you say, a user name inspired by a Marc Bolan / T-Rex song title.

I suppose my wife would want me to be 20th Century Boy because when we started the new millenium, instead of celebrating the dawn of the new century like everyone else I was mourning the end of the previous one, - the 20th Century.

I apologise if this has been posted on here before,if it hasn't, some of you may find this interesting, particularly the residents of Arbourthorne. When I first saw this, I was gobsmacked, couldn't believe he turned up here. I asked my parents about it and they had no recollection of it.

Although he was on his way down by this point, I would imagine Marc Bolan at The Arbourthorne Hotel was pretty big news at the time. Wonder if he called in the chippy for his tea on the way back http://www.sheffieldhistory.co.uk/forums/public/style_emoticons/#EMO_DIR#/smile.gif

Thanks for that Russell and madannie.

I had noticed that the initial posted link was now dead and wanted to see the film again.

In 1975 when this happened I was at Hull University so missed it, my younger brother knew of it but also missed it but 2 of his mates went along and he wanted to know if they were in it.

Surprisingly we were reminded of this event by our mother, now in her mid 80s, but she remembered it happening as she lived 9as we did at the time) just down the road from the Arbourthorne Hotel on Eastern Avenue opposite the Carlton facing straight up Errington Road towards the Arbourthorne Hotel.

Keith Skewes in his 8mm film refers to it as "a Hotel in the suburbs of Sheffield", well a hotel in name only, - it was boozer like lots of others, - who want bed and half board for a week on the Arbourthorne?

He also states that rather than perform at ground level they performed "from the roof of the bar". This is not possible as the bars 9both of them) are under the apexed roof on the ground floor, and had function rooms above. There was some flat roof, - at the side over the side entrance and toilets and at the back over the off licence. I suspect that T-Rex, like the Everly Pregnant Brothers, performed "on the bog roof"

I am also wondering about his comments about a telling off from the Education Committee for "encouraging kids to wag it" from school to see their hero. My brother remembers it being in the summer months, -August, in which case schools would have been out on holiday anyway, but if it was in school summer holiday this would also have been university vacation which was even longer, 10 weeks rather than 6, and I would have been at home to see it if that was the case. So, not sure of the exact date. Me and Keith Skewes seem to agree it was in school time, my brother thinks otherwise.

I don't know how many kids would have wagged it from one of the 2 local schools (Norfolk and Hurlfield) to see T-Rex, but at my old school Norfolk around 3 years or so earlier while I was still there their was a football match in which Sheffield Wednesday were to play the Brazilian team Santos at Hillsborough. At that time Santos had the most famous footballer in the World, Pele, and all the kids wanted to see him, however the match was to take place in school time. Before the date of the match the headmaster had announced in assemblies that anyone wagging it to go and see Pele would be caned. On the day hundreds of kids, nearly all lads, were absent without reason and had "wagged it". The headmaster was then faced with the dilemma of caning all of them.

It was no deterrent, it didn't stop them going to see Pele

I don't think the same threat would stop them going to see Marc Bolan either.

However, from Hurlfield / Norfolk schools to Hillsborough is 2 bus rides, - but to the Arbourthorne Hotel it is a few minutes walk.

I suspect that a lot more would have been caught red handed in the act of wagging it rather than just getting done on their return.

Wednesday vs Santos ...

Our headmaster at Newfield threatened dire consequences for waggers, but faced with the size of the walk out he gave us permission to leave for Hillsborough at dinner time. All I remember of the afternoon were the endless chants of "GIVE IT to PELE".

I have never really been a football fan, - or a fan of any sort of sport come to that, so I was not one of the many that wagged it to see Pele.

My dislike of sports got me a few funny looks many years later when, as a teacher, suitable sports / games for introducing into the school curriculum was being discussed at a meeting. The school I was at was "a specialist sports college" at the time.

The conversation went something like this

"What sports do you think we should do Dave"

"Well, I can think of three, Dominoes, Darts and Snooker"

"Oh, that's different, why do you think those?"

"Well at least I'll be able to sup a few pints of beer while I suffer the game!"

I never went to Hillsborough before or after, but even Hillsborough was better than Newfield.

That doesn't sound very good Oldbloke.

I have a lot of respect for Newfield school.

In the late 60s and early 70s at Norfolk we had a couple of teachers that taught me and Stuart0742 photography, darkroom processing and cinematography. We eventually got around to making our own 8mm films around the school. One day one of the teachers decided to show us a school film he had borrowed made by another local school, The other local school turned out to be Newfield. It was filmed on professional 16mm film but was still, like our 8mm efforts, a silent film, but as well as the better picture definition and sharpness which had come from the bigger gauge film you couldn't help but notice the quality of the acting, scene viewpoints and editing cuts to tell the story. I was very impressed even though I had never been to the school.

Several years later, 1978 to be precise, I was a student teacher and I did my long, final teaching practice, at Newfield (I had done my first one in 1977 at Hurlfield!!). Again I was impressed with the quality of the work being done in the school, the standards of teaching, the quality of MOST of the students (every school has its "naughty boys and girls"). I found the whole teaching practice there very rewarding. The only downside I could find to the school was that like one of my own previous schools, Ashleigh, it was a split site 2 building school and walking between the 2 sites, between lessons in bad weather wasn't fun and a total waste of time. However, the school has recently been rebuilt so even this small negative should now be a thing of the past.

I really can't say anything nice about Newfield 1970-75, the best thing I ever did was walk down that drive (officially) for the last time.

Some of the teachers were great, but they couldn't make up for the rest of the place.

I had a friend teaching at Newfield about ten years ago and helped him out by taking my PA gear up into the hall (blue / girls building) and sorting the kids out for a little concert. It was the best day I ever had at school. The kids were very polite, helpful and friendly, I was very impressed.

Sorry to hear you had such a bad experience at Newfield school. I know from his comments that History Dude didn't enjoy his time at Hurlfield either and on the Norfolk school topic which I started we occasionally get comments from ex students who had hated it. I suppose it takes all sorts and everyones experiences in a particular school are different but you are certainly not alone in disliking the experience. I must have been very fortunate in that both schools that I went to, Norfolk and Ashleigh, and all the schools I did teaching at, Hurlfield, High Storrs and Newfield, were all pleasant, but different, experinces which I enjoyed.
