I can remember going to Baileys in 78 when i was 18 and dancing to saturday night fever. I was sure that Romeo and Juliets came later in the 80's but a localo book i am reading states Romeo's was first....does anyone know which came first, it's doing my head in because I am sure my dates are right :-)

Baileys came first, then Romesos, there were all converted during 1978 except Watford and Leicester, I worked at the Doncaster Club from 1977 to 1984 when it was converted to Seventh Heaven. I have a Facebook group dedicated to that club plus links to EMI & First Leisure plus a You Tube Channel.

Bailey's was called the Cavendish first then became Bailey's in the early 70's. In 1978 the Stage Manager was Derek. Derek left when they started the conversion. I started to go to Bailey's in 1973. I met Derek then. He was the Assistant Stage Manager at the time with Andy as the Stage Manager. When Andy left Derek was made Stage Manager. Derek & I held our engagement party in Bailey's in July 1973. We married in 1975. So naturally I have some very happy memories of Bailey's.

So yes Bailey's definately came first then Romeos.

How strange, i have only just joined this site for a reason which was nothing to do with the nightclub section and was just re-living some old memories by browsing through. I am the Andy that Tinkerbell refers to and worked as stage manager there for about three and a half years. Somewhere I think I have a picture of the sraff at the time. I remember Mick Thorpe as the manager when I started and him being followed by Malcolm Dearing. Originally met my first wife in Baileys and remeber great times there. Does anyone remeber Crazy Nights on a Tuesday?

I'm writing a piece on Bailey's in 1978 for my blog at the moment.

My memories...

Friendly, mixed crowd, never saw any trouble.

Turned a blind eye to underage drinking (we were 17, looked 15).

Fairly strict dress code, my mate got thrown out for wearing a suit but with sneakers.

No-one was that bothered about watching the bands.

Easiest DJ gig in the world, just play the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack and you had a full dance floor.

Any other insights welcome!
