I did a search but can't find any reference to Park Boys School.

Are there any Waltons out there with a GGGrandfather called Fred?

Still listed 1925 at that address but no trade shown.

In February 1875 Samuel Snelson was appointed as assistant master at an un-named Board School, at the salary of £60 per annum. In 1882 Mr Samuel Snelson was a chemistry teacher at the Central Evening School, Leopold street. In 1893 Mr Snelson was secretary of the Head Teachers Association. He had also performed the duties of auditor for the Sheffield and District Teachers Association. He and his wife Elizabeth lived at 279 Granville Road.

Frederick Walton aged 12 in 1901, lived at 3 Court, 3 house Duke Street, son of Frederick (Iron Puddler) and Louisa.

Thanks everyone for the information, the drawing on Picture Sheffield shows a floor plan of the school which conforms exactly to the map. The architects' description of the building made me smile i.e. 122,438 cu feet of 'breathing space'. Is that phraseology still used? Also, for 738 'scholars' - like to bet they weren't all 'scholars'.

I'm struggling to find the exact location of the school on the Geographia Plan of Sheffield. I'm looking around the area of Duke Street, I can see Norwich Street which is behind Midland Station but I can't find any of the other streets.

Thanks for the links Steve, I especially like the one taken from Duke Street. I have a photo from The Star taken from the same spot with a tram running up Duke Street. The angle is too low to show the school but there is an interesting building in the background. Would I be allowed to post it?

Yes post the photo THYLACINE, just add a note stating the source of image, if we get any complaints it can soon be removed.

Interesting looking building in the background of this pic. Can anyone identify it?

Take that photo back and tell them you want to exchange it for a larger one

We know the photo is of Duke St so could the building be the Corn Exchange?

This brings back memories! I think this was taken mid fifties. My Mum used to walk down to Gunstones at the bottom of Duke Street for bread (Dad insisted it was to be from there). We used to walk past the Norfolk Picture Palace on the way down. And sometimes back on the tram to the top of Fitzwalter Road (quite a treat). We used to live at 13 Seabrook Road, which was off Stafford Road.

My wife has had a look and seems to think that is the Victoria Hotel, now the Holiday Inn?

I would never have thought that Park School and Park Hill Flats could have existed at the same time. Your photo doesn't do the school any favours, it looks like something out of a Bronte novel. Any clue as to the year of the photo and when the school was finally flattened?

You're a mine of information Steve. The buildings in the foreground are interesting, are we looking at 1) War damage 2) Demolition 3) Vandalism 4) All three?
