vox
Something I find very poignant, is this callous statement on his discharge certificate. "He is discharged in consequence of - Surplus to military requirements (having suffered impairments since entry into the service)" This about a man who spent the rest of his life with one leg an inch shorter than the other, and severe shell shock which left him a broken man towards the end of his life.
