Heritage Crafts Are Not Creative!

Just had this from the Hunter AS.

A consultancy paper currently being reviewed by DCMS ( http://www.scribd.com/fullscreen/119783999?access_key=key-1o44si4yjbeg02mrvh4d) is aimed at better defining Britain's creative industries. A worrying recommendation of the paper is that DCMS removes traditional crafts (Heritage crafts) from this category as it seems Craft is not Creative!! This will have a significant impact on practitioners to receive forms of support, access to finance, provision of training, marketing of output etc.

There are of course significant implications for the Sheffield that many of us know and love. Traditional / Heritage crafts occupy a number of important and iconic buildings and landscapes in Sheffield and without inclusion in the creative industries list, they risk being subjected to a diminishing pool of support. If we lose Heritage crafts from Sheffield then we risk losing the character of some unique districts. Those of you who have supported the recent Portland works campaign will know how important this is. Do please take time to sign the UK government petition at https://submissions.epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/49537/signature/new, and please visit the heritage crafts website or their facebook page or blog and make comments. It is one thing to sign a petition but it would be good if Sheffielders could comment/testify to the added value that living amongst heritage/traditional craftworkers brings to the city.

Grand American Attraction !

First Visit to Sheffield of Junius Booth's Play and Company, In the Great Realistic and Dramatic Production, entitled - Way Out West by Junius Booth.

Junius Booth was the grandson of the American actor Junius Brutus Booth, and nephew of Junius Wilkes Booth (Abraham Lincoln’s assassin). His play ‘Way Out West’ depicted, according to this playbill for Sheffield’s Alexandra Theatre, “in truthful form a chapter from the lives of those pioneers who “blazed the Trail” for civilization in the Far West of America”. Set in the “Big Flume” Hotel and other locations on the Carson Trail, the play employed a “Pack of Real Wolves” for its effect. The playbill also states that “the Caribou-Hide Sleeping Bag used in the Hut was made by the United States Government and carried by Lieutenant Peary on his dash for the North Pole”.

I am trying to assist a work colleague in tracing a family member who i believe is buried in Sheffield and i was hopng someone on this forum may be able to help? The gentleman i am trying to find is Gilbert Stonehouse (son of Edwin Stonehouse).

The information that we have is that he was born in 1915 in Ecclesall Bierlow. Gilbert married Monica Kempster on 12th April 1941 at the Church of the Sacred Heart, Forbes Road in Sheffield. According to the GenesReunited web site he died in Sheffield in 1945 (between Jan - Mar) aged 29 although my colleague had been told by her mother that he died in 1948.

Ideally we would like to find out where he is buried as my colleague would like to visit his grave. I have tried doing a search on the Sheffield Indexers web site but no records appear for this name.

Thanks for any help!

These plates are what was used to electric etch knife blades, even though there are several different names here, they were all etched on by what was Leppingtons but they ended up being bought by George Butler, these company's just put an order in for a Gross or so of knives and the appropriate etch was put on for that customer. as you can see the majority need a polish but since I put in for my bus pass, I don't have access to a polishing machine to improve the look of them but I suppose I will donate them to the Kelham Island Museum.

Tropical Fish Craze In The 70's & 80's

Not certain why but back in the 70's and early 80's lots of shops sprung up selling Tropical Fish. Tanks seem to appear in everybody's homes, not just the dentist surgery. Most people had a 24 X 12 x 12 tank, that didn't leak thanks to the introduction of Silicone Rubber sealants. The stuff that's now used to seal baths to the wall.

One reason why Sheffield people went mad for fish tanks could have been the Hole In The Road fish tank!

Shops selling them appeared all over Sheffield. One of my favourites was one called Aqua Marine Tropicals up Broad Street. But most people knew it has Gordon's, after the chap that ran it. Even if you didn't buy your fish from him, you went to him for advice or if you had sick fish!

I rather suspect many of us got into fish keeping from School biology lessons. At Hurlfield they had several large tanks to study fish. I suppose it was cheaper and more practical than keeping cows!

By the 80's a massive place was set up on West Bar, called the International Aquatic Centre. That had a room that got so hot it was like going to the tropics! After that the craze seems to have died. All that left is a few odd shops scattered around, and the odd Garden Centre that mostly stocks pond materials. The last vestiges of the Tropical Fish phase to hit Sheffield.

Back in 1978 if you mentioned a Neon Tetra or a Guppy to anyone in Sheffield chances are they would have known what you were talking about. Do the same today and they would think you were talking about aliens or some kind of computer game.

Does Anyone Remember 'mi Amigo' Crashing In Endcliffe Park?

Mi Amigo

It happened in the year nineteen forty- four

Ten young lives from that day were with us no more

They were flying a B17 bomber plane

A ten man crew “Mi Amigo” was her name

Returning from a raid over Denmark

Badly damaged and struggling back to her mark

Her radio dead and engine misfiring

The skin in tatters from all the shell firing

A nurse plane was left to guide her way home

But they lost sight in the clouds and presumed she was gone

But the pilot valiantly tried to find the English coast

He needed to reach Charleston but managed Sheffield, their last post.

It was just before five on that February day

Children in Endcliffe Park with a football to play

Mi Amigo couldn’t wait she had to come down

She spiralled and tried to land in the Park ground

The pilot he saw the children playing there

He lifted the nose and tried to climb in the air

There is a Memorial Stone in the park these days

They planted ten oak trees for the boys they couldn’t save

The boys were all American aged twenty-one to twenty-four

February Twenty Second, they were lost far from their home shore

The Pilot determined he missed the children and hit in the trees

Heroes to the parents of the children playing in that February freeze

My mother watched the plane as it struggled overhead

The engine sound and smoke from it filled them with dread

They had souvenirs made from the Perspex nose of the plane

It was the anniversary in Feb of
10 American boys that died in a Park where I played as a child.
My mother would normally have been playing there with the others
but she watched it from her sick bed at home as the plane passed yards
from their roof. Although she was an eyewitness this information is
from A book By D Harvey called Mi Amigo Sheffield's Flying Fortress

Longley 4G Community Centre is delighted to have received funding through Heritage Lottery fund to deliver an All Our Stories Project. The local history project has two strands: one to research the life of J G Graves, whose trust bequeathed the Four Greens and the second to build up a timeline of the local area and how it has developed over the centuries.

Working with children from Longley School, the All Our Stories Project will include visits to the Central Archives and Graves Art Gallery as well as locally held workshops to interview older residents who have memories of Longley which they are willing to share. All the materials will form the basis of an exhibition in the Longley 4G Community Centre which will remain on display for the life of the Project.

Farewell Mr Miller

Seeing SteveHB's map on a recent post brought back memories. My wife and I lived with the mother-in-law for 2 years,1970-72 in the house marked by the arrow. In the house next door (109) lived Mr & Mrs Miller. This must have been an assumed name as they were Polish refugees. They were really nice neighbours, honest and hard working, grew their own vegetables and did all the maintenance on their house.

Coming home from work one evening I noticed a large stain on the pavement outside Mr Millers house and two of the iron spikes on top of the railings had been snapped off. The poor man had been on the roof fixing the slates. His wife, standing at the top of the ladder had seen him fall.

A few days later, by sheer coincidence I met a man at Firvale shops looking for directions to Mr Millers house. He was a stocky man with a weather-beaten face, huge hands and obviously not used to wearing a collar and tie. It was Mr Miller's brother from Poland. When I showed him the house he broke down and wept. And I think I did too.

I’m trying to learn about Sheffield’s first automatic telephone exchange. I’ve seen a suggestion that this was opened in the mid-1920s, but can’t locate details. Can anyone help, please? Where was it? When? Did it cover all of Sheffield? Etc!

I was brought up at No 8 Thompson Road, the Choudries lived next door at No. 6. I was wondering, as these are the first two houses on your right as you go up Thompson Road, what happened to No 2 and No 4? Were they knocked down so that Yankies could be built. I'd like to know more of the road too. From what I can gather one of my family was a domestic servant for one of the families that lived in No. 8.

Patients from Wharncliffe war hospital visited it I think for the grounds and the sporting facilities ? Mr E. Robinson owned it pre club days, gardener was a Mr Chester. Do you think that is Mr Robinson and Mr Chester in the image ?
